A battery terminal fuse (also known as a fuse link or terminal-mounted fuse) is a high-current protection device that mounts directly onto a battery post. It provides the first line of protection between the battery and your vehicle or auxiliary electrical system.
Battery terminal fuses protect against short circuits and overcurrent faults that could otherwise cause wiring damage or fire. Because they’re mounted at the source (directly on the battery terminal) they ensure your system is protected from the very start of the power line.
They’re commonly used in 4WDs, caravans, campers, and marine systems where compact and direct protection is required. They’re perfect for protecting DC-DC chargers, inverters, lithium batteries, and solar charge controllers.
Battery terminal fuses mount directly onto the positive battery post using a compatible fuse holder. Connect your power cable to the other side of the holder, ensuring a tight, corrosion-free connection. Always disconnect the battery before installation for safety.
Choose a fuse that matches the maximum continuous current of your connected load, ensuring it’s within the limits of both the cabling and the device being protected. For example, a 100A inverter circuit might use a 125A or 150A fuse. Refer to your equipment manufacturer’s recommendations for accurate sizing.
